Pumpkin Isn’t Just a Fall Food
It seems like perfect timing to discuss the health benefits of pure pumpkin. We humans are consuming pumpkin lattes, pumpkin breads, muffins – YUM! But did you know pumpkin is a great support for your pup’s digestion all year round? We know that pumpkin contains valuable vitamins/minerals like Vitamins A & C, beta-carotene, magnesium, potassium and zinc. But pumpkin is much more beneficial than just added nutrients. It can help support pups with constipation and diarrhea.. Sound confusing? Veterinarian, Dr. Karen Becker states that fiber is categorized into soluble and insoluble fiber. “Soluble fibers bind with fatty acids and slow digestion, which can have a stabilizing effect on an animal’s blood sugar levels, as well as, slow bouts of diarrhea. Insoluble fiber provides roughage, which helps to bulk up the stool and move waste products through the intestine. Because of this, insoluble fiber prevents constipation and keeps pets regular.”
Pumpkin can also benefit pups trying to lose a few pounds. The high fiber content can help your pup feel more full. Try cutting a portion of your pup’s kibble and replacing it with a bit of pumpkin.
Pumpkin is great for all our kitty friends too! The high water content in canned pumpkin can also be helpful supporting cats that are prone to hairballs.
Pumpkin isn’t just a food to pull out during the Autumn season.. It is a year-round digestion support for pups and cats alike. Just one other item you can add into your pet’s food rotation. Variety is the spice of life.
