Potty on Cue!

POTTY ON CUE?

We asked our friends at Enjoy Your Dog Training – Can you train your dog to go potty on cue?  Here is the answer from Pam, the owner and dog trainer extraordinaire!

Did you know you can teach your dog to potty on cue?

It’s an easy skill with powerful benefits – for both you and your dog!

Start by choosing a consistent “potty spot”.

Keep your dog on leash and stay in the potty zone – no walks or wandering.  This helps keep your dog focused and know this isn’t playtime, it’s potty time.

Use a clear cue like “break” or “go potty” as they start to go.  Stay calm and patient.  Once they go, praise enthusiastically like they won a Gold Medal – and reward with a delicious treat.  As they learn the cue, say the cue soon as you reach the potty spot.

Repeat this routine regularly, and your dog will start to understand the cue, associate the spot with the behavior, and respond with confidence.

Why it’s worth it:

-Quick bathroom breaks for those busy days

-Great for service and therapy dogs who need reliable routines

-Helps prevent accidents – because your dog knows what’s expected

With a little practice, you’ll have a dog who knows when and where to go—all thanks to clear communication and a sprinkle of patience.
