Cat 101 – Health and Enrichment

🐱 Why “All Things Cat” Matters for a Happier Cat!

In this Cat 101 Blog, we will cover food, play and enrichment for our cats.

Cats may have a reputation for being independent, but the truth is—they need just as much support, enrichment, and thoughtful care as your family dog.

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on all things cat here at Happy Dog – starting with three of the most important (and often overlooked!) areas of feline wellness:
👉 moisture-rich diets
👉 play
👉 enrichment

💧 Why Moisture in Your Cat’s Diet is So Important

Cats are naturally low-thirst animals.

In the wild, they get most of their hydration from their prey—not from a water bowl. That means many cats don’t drink enough water on their own, which can lead to:

  • dehydration – can become chronic
  • urinary issues
  • kidney stress over time

👉 The solution? Add moisture through food.

Incorporating any of the following can make a big difference:

  • Canned food – an easy, convenient way to boost hydration
  • Fresh or gently cooked food – adds both moisture and whole-food nutrients
  • Raw diets – naturally high in moisture and biologically appropriate

Even if you’re not ready to fully switch foods, adding moisture as a topper is a great step.

Think of it as upgrading your cat’s diet—not replacing it.

🧶 Cats Need Play Too (Yes, even “Lazy” ones)

Cats are natural hunters—and play is how they express that instinct. Adding a few new fun cat toys to the mix is also exciting for your cat!

Without regular play, you may see:

  • boredom
  • nighttime zoomies (at 3am, of course)
  • unwanted behaviors

🐾 Types of Play to Include:

1. Solo Toys (Independent Play)
Perfect for when you’re not home:

  • ball tracks
  • kick toys
  • motion toys

2. Wand Toys (Interactive Play)
This is where the magic happens—YOU become the “prey.”

  • feather wands
  • ribbon teasers
  • anything that mimics movement

👉 Just 5–10 minutes a day can make a huge difference.

3. Puzzle & Enrichment Toys (Mental Stimulation)
Great for slowing down eating and engaging their brain:

  • puzzle feeders
  • treat-dispensing toys

Cats LOVE to hunt—but most indoor cats never get the chance.

Here’s a super simple way to tap into that instinct:

🐟 The Freeze-Dried (or other high value treat) Treasure Hunt

  1. Grab your cat’s favorite freeze-dried treats or whatever their favorite treat might be
  2. Hide small pieces around your home:
    • on a windowsill
    • behind a chair
    • along a cat tree
    • near their favorite nap spot
  3. Let your cat explore and find them!

Why this works:

  • encourages natural scavenging behavior
  • builds confidence
  • provides mental stimulation
  • burns energy in a low-stress way

💡 Start easy, then make it more challenging as they get the hang of it!
